Sash Window Restoration

From tired to beautiful, the traditional way.

Complete restoration

Windows Restored, Character Kept

Full restoration takes a window that is tired, draughty and stuck and returns it to how it was meant to be: smooth, secure, weathertight and beautiful.

I work on Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian sash windows every week, including Grade 1 and Grade 2 listed buildings where a sympathetic, like for like approach is essential. Everything is done with traditional materials and methods, backed by modern draught proofing where it earns its place.

The process

How A Restoration Runs

Survey and quote

I inspect every window, explain what each one needs and give you a clear written quote. No call out charge, no pressure.

Sashes removed

The sashes come out carefully, ready for proper workbench attention. Openings are made weathertight while I work.

Strip and repair

Old failed paint comes off, decayed timber is cut out and new timber spliced in. Joints are re-glued and squared.

Draught proofing

Brush seal draught proofing is routed discreetly into the frames, ending rattles, draughts and dust.

Glazing attended to

Cracked panes are replaced and failed putty renewed. This is also the moment to upgrade to slimline double glazing if you wish.

Redecoration

Timber is primed and finished with Zinsser systems, applied as an approved applicator, for a finish that lasts.

Rebalanced and rehung

New cords, serviced pulleys and correctly balanced weights. The windows glide, lock and look as they did when new.

Trusted With Heritage Homes

Listed buildings and conservation areas need a contractor who understands what must be preserved and what can be improved. Repairs are made like for like, mouldings are matched exactly and any upgrades, such as draught proofing, are fully reversible.

A customer in a Grade 2 listed property had me renovate two oriel windows and called the work "of a very high standard". That is the standard every home gets.
